NB Creator Katie: Full Time Farm Girl Finds Adventure

Meet Katie. She lives in Suffolk, Virginia milking cows twice a day and loving a good cup of coffee. She's been part of this nature backs community for years and we're excited to share more about her and the light she captures through her photos. Katie is a ray of sunshine which is why we've looked to her to help inspire the Sunny Days collection.

What do you do for work?

I'm a full time farm girl! I milk cows twice a day. Plant and harvest our big gardens. I do the deliveries every Wednesday and Thursday and grill breakfast at a farmers market every Saturday. I also have a side hustle photography business, I mostly do couples and weddings.

When did you first start taking pictures?

Back in 2010 I picked up an old Canon Rebel xt, and really got into macro photography! My aunt was the one who got me out of my comfort zone into people photography. I was her second at a wedding in 2012, and I have never looked back! I was hooked!

What do you like about being behind the camera?

I started with macro because I loved capturing things that no one would see unless they were looking for it! The smallest things can bring the most joy and beauty. I wanted to remind myself of that, and wanted to share it with the world.

People photography is really where it's all at for me. I think we are here on this planet to know and love others well, and to remind them of who they are and where they are going! My goal in photography is to make whoever is in front of my camera feel seen, loved and cared for. Especially if they are shy or uncomfortable. I want them to look at my photographs and say, "Wow, that's me!" or "I do that all the time!" I just want people to see themselves as we see them, beautiful and unique!

I also know there is something so powerful about a photograph that makes you remember the story, the smell, what was being said, who was there, etc. Memories kept safe forever and ever! I want people to remember this part of their life and their story.

What are some of your hobbies and interests?

Photography. I love capturing humans being themselves.I head up a local photo group! I needed a photography community and I figured others did too, so I started that up in 2019 and it has been such a joy! Sometimes I teach, sometimes we talk, sometimes we walk for miles, capturing things as we go! But every time we enjoy life and each other. I think that is why we are here on this earth. To do our best to take care of each other.

Coffee. I love the story, I want to know which mountain these beans were grown on, I want to know about the hard working people behind the harvesting, I want to know why different processes like washed or dried makes a difference, and I want to enjoy every drop of good coffee I have! Knowing the story makes me appreciate and enjoy my cup even more! I love authentic, unique coffee shops where the owners are excited to tell their whys and hows.

Succulent Plants. They can be hard to keep alive but I love the challenge. They greet me every morning with their happy green leaves and little flowers. I love desert plants and think they are just super cool!

I love people. I love their stories. I love personalities and want to know them on a deeper level than staying on the surface. It takes being vulnerable and getting real with each other, but I think that is how we can truly take care of each other and be one another's biggest fan!

The beach is my happy, peaceful place. I'd get up every day and catch the sunrise if I lived by the ocean. For now, I'll drive the hour whenever I can!

The mountains are where I go to clear my head. Hiking and climbing are hard but really good for my emotional and mental health. It makes my heart so grateful!

How does nature backs inspire you?

Two things really inspire me about this company: 1) The people in this community really care for each other. Truly. We have this bond that I don't really have anywhere else. These friends are special, so kind, loving and caring. 2) This company reminds me there is SO much more to life than being busy and having a full schedule. Being outdoors helps clear my head and helps me breathe deeper, and just makes me so happy! If I can do it with friends, it's even better! Give me a hammock and someone to hang with and I will forget about time and work for the rest of the day. I am grateful for the reminder to just BE.

Where have you gone for nb meet ups?

2021 Shenandoah was my first meet up! That was something very special! I will never forget that adventure.

2022 Great Smokies was my second I was able to experience with this group, also a time I will cherish.

2023 Virginia Beach Noah came with his girl friend and we got to hang out for an evening! Such a gift to take photographs, catch up and show him the ocean!

Where are some of your favorite places to explore with friends and family?

Locally, Va Beach is my favorite place to be. I love meeting people at a coffee shop, catching up on life and things and then walking to the oceanfront! Coffee and photos are usual if you hang out with me :)

In Suffolk, there is a park behind a shop, you would probably not know it was there. But the woods have some walking paths that lead back to a lake, trails, and a beautiful spot to catch the sunset! I love to take my family and friends back there! I set them up with some NB gear and we have a blast for the rest of the afternoon! We end the evening sitting in the quiet stillness, listening to the peaceful water, taking in the calm air.

Where is a place that you haven’t gone that would like to go to? Why?

The Grand Canyons! It is a place I have always wanted to go my whole life! I think it would be an adventure like no other. I have never seen in person an area like that, just super cool! My dad would totally do it with me, and his dad would have too if he was still here. So I'd do it for my Grandpa "Papa" who is no longer with us :)
